Jorge J. Rivera, MD is a board certified ophthalmologist who has been in private practice since 2003.  He is double fellowship trained in glaucoma and cornea/refractive surgery, making him highly qualified to offer his patients an exceptional level of care.  Prior to founding Eye Consultants of Rhode Island in 2018, Dr. Rivera practiced ophthalmology in Southcoast Massachusetts for many years. 

Following an internship in Internal Medicine at the Hospital of Saint Raphael/Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Rivera completed his ophthalmology residency and glaucoma fellowship at the New England Eye Center/Tufts University School of Medicine.  In addition, Dr. Rivera pursued a fellowship in cornea, external diseases, and refractive surgery at Barnes Jewish Hospital/ Washington University School of Medicine.

Dr. Rivera has an active role in ophthalmology resident education. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.  Dr. Rivera is a recipient of the H. Frederick Stephens MD award for outstanding teaching and a Special Award for outstanding cataract surgery instruction.  Dr. Rivera is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the American Medical Association.

Dr. Rivera was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  He is a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico, where he received his undergraduate and medical school degrees with high honors.  Dr. Rivera currently resides in Barrington, Rhode Island with his wife Silvana and three children.  He is fluent in Spanish and has conversational knowledge of Portuguese.
